Liz oversees assessment research at NFER. She has directed a large number of assessment development projects, primarily in the area of literacy, and many on a national scale. This includes the key stage 2 tests in English reading and writing between 1997 and 2012, and the national literacy and numeracy assessments for Wales 2010-2016. She is currently working on several international assessment development and research projects. Between 2001 and 2013 she was the National Research Coordinator for the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), an international comparative survey of the reading skills of 9-10-year-olds, and reading consultant for PIRLS 2016 and 2021. Liz has a wide range of teaching experience including as deputy headteacher of a combined school, establishing and managing an integrated department for children with learning difficulties, and working in a secondary special school.
